While the overall attacking scheme has produced a myriad of balls off posts, crossbars, breakaways, and other near misses, the biggest problems continue to be in the back.
"After the Buffalo match, we thought we had a lot of the defensive issues straightened out, but obviously we still have a long way to go," said head coach Mike Moyer. "We certainly aren't going to panic, but it would be nice if we could place a finger on these ridiculous defensive miscues. Even though we have yet to score a goal, we are pleased with our attack, and the numerous good opportunities we've been creating. Now, if only we can find somone to tuck one or two of them away, and I'm sure we will. However, the bad news is that defensively, we are having some major issues...and not with Rich (GK Richard Kessler) who has played extremely well."
"We took a very young squad to Charm City FC, and at times, the inexperience showed, but this is what we're all about. We will continue to help the younger players grow and we will continue to play them a lot of minutes," Moyer said.
Saturday's starting lineup included Governor Mifflin high school senior Gibrilla Conde, who played 75 minutes, Twin Valley senior Josh Labik played the final 45, and Wilson high school sophomore goalkeeper Josh Pacella entered the match at the 75 minute mark and did not concede a goal.
Erik Weber and Mark Yost also started for the REVS. Both players started for the U18 FC Revolution youth team last year, and are now college freshmen.
"Max Ferdinand continues to shine," Moyer continued. "After just two games, he has been the talk of the league. Every time Max touches the ball, exciting things happen. Now, if we can only get it to him more often, the goals should start to come. Max is certainly one of the most creative local players I've seen in a long time, and if he can stay healthy, he has a very bright future in the game."
The schedule doesn't get any easier for the senior squad as they play host to the defending NPSL National Champion Pennsylvania Stoners on Thursday night at Albright's Shirk Stadium at 7:00 pm. The men travel to Buffalo for a Saturday night clash, then to Erie for a Sunday afternoon game.
"We're hoping to have some of our starters like Eric (Puls) and Jeff (Koegel) back for Thursday's game, and hopefully big Pete Rowley will make his return from injury during the long road trip."
